CB Radios

The 27 MHz sets from PNI and TTI cover the UK 40 and EU 40 channels in AM and FM at 4 watts, for a cab or a car. The 10 metre multimode transceivers from CRT, AnyTone and Moonraker work 28 to 29.7 MHz and add SSB, up to 40W on the Moonraker Titan and 60W PEP on the CRT SS 8900. The Superstar SS 3900 has SSB at 27 MHz.

  • Power: 12V on the PNI HP8000L and HP8001L, 12V/24V on the HP 8024, HP 9001 PRO, HP 9500 and TTI TCB 900 for trucks.
  • Fitting: the TTI TCB 900 is 94mm deep, the PNI Escort HP 6500 V3 has a quick disconnect bracket.
  • Also here: an RG58 patch lead, a fused power lead and a 13.8V DC 20A supply.

Which CB radio suits your vehicle, and which of these need a licence?

Two kinds of set sit here: the 28 MHz radios are 10 metre band transceivers, not CB. The Anytone AT-5555 PLUS/N covers 28.000 to 29.700 MHz in AM, FM, SSB and CW at up to 40 W, and its description calls it a 10 metre HF mobile for licensed amateur radio use. The CRT SS 6900V, SS 8900, ARES II and Moonraker Titan share that band. The 27 MHz sets are the CB radios, and each one that states an output quotes 4 W AM and FM.

Within that group, the frequency line tells you which channel blocks you get. The PNI HP8000L covers the UK40 and EU CB frequencies across 80 AM/FM channels. The TTI TCB-900 prints both blocks, 26.965 to 27.405 MHz for CEPT and 27.60125 to 27.99125 MHz for the UK. The HP8024, HP8001L, HP 9001 PRO and HP 9500 state 26.965 to 27.405 MHz alone.

Then match the set to the cab. The HP8024, TCB-900, HP 9001 PRO and HP 9500 all state 12 V and 24 V, the HP8024 named for trucks and TIRs. Space settles the rest: the TCB-900 is 94 mm deep, with a front speaker and a bracket or DIN fit, while the PNI Escort HP 6500 V3 is 120 x 110 x 27 mm and 470 g, with 40 UK and 40 EU channels. For sideband on 27 MHz, the Superstar SS 3900 adds LSB and USB at 12 W.

The check most often got wrong is the aerial, not the radio. The HP8000L and TCB-900 both quote a 50 ohm unbalanced load, and the TCB-900 and AT-5555 PLUS/N specify an SO239 socket, so the coax needs a PL259 at the radio end. The HP 9500 adds the rest: mounts need a sound metal earth, and the aerial is tuned with an SWR meter, doors and bonnet closed. Skip it and SWR stays high, which is why the CRT SS 6900V forbids transmit.
