Mobile CB antennas for cars, vans and trucks, from short whips like the Sirio Titanium 800 at 790 mm to full height trucker antennas such as the Sirio Performer 5000 at 1965 mm and the Hi-Power 4000 at 2030 mm. Sirio, GGD, Lemm, TTI, PNI and Santiago, as kits or antenna only.

  • Fitting: mostly PL259, SO239 on the Santiago 600, 3/8 thread on the Sirio Twin Log 5.
  • Mounting: a magnetic base such as the Sirio Mag 145 PL, a triple mag set, a fixed base or thru hole.
  • Cable: RG58 runs 3.6 m on the TTI M145 and 4.5 m on the Santiago 600, while some PL versions come without it.
  • Band: 27 to 30 MHz on the Bull Trucker 5000, 27 to 28.5 MHz on the GGD Miniturbo.

How short can a mobile CB aerial be before it costs you range?

Two figures settle this: radiator height, and the power the loading coil will carry. The Sirio Titanium 800 pairs a 790 mm whip with a rating of 15 Watts continuous, 150 Watts short time, the trade when height is the constraint and power is not. The Lemm MiniTurbo AT-1002 is 110 cm, quotes 2 dB gain and handles 200 W, sized for a car, van or pickup without the height of a full size whip. The Santiago 600 is a 5/8 wavelength design, 1,550 mm of stainless steel quoting 4 dB relative gain and 600W RMS, full size territory where low branches matter more than the aerial.

Mounts have to suit the vehicle, not the radio. On the TTI M145 the magnet needs a clean, flat metal surface both to hold and to act as the ground plane, so the centre of a steel roof or boot lid is the usual choice. It comes complete with magmount, 3.6 m of RG 58 and a UHF-male PL 259 fitted. The Santiago 600 goes the other way, with a 16 mm mounting hole, an SO-239 base and 4.5 m of RG-58 that has to reach the set along your cable route.

With an amplifier, read the continuous rating, not the short time one. The TTI M145 quotes 300 Watts continuous against 900 Watts short time. The Sirio Truck Bull 5000 PL is a base loaded trucker whip of 1,665 mm, tunable 27 to 30 MHz, rated 5000W ICAS and usable singly or as a twin co-phased pair.

The check buyers get wrong most often: PL in a model name is the connector, a UHF-male PL 259, not a promise of a complete kit. The Truck Bull 5000 PL states that the cable is not included, while the TTI M145 comes with its magmount and lead. Read the cable line before ordering, then set the standing wave ratio with an SWR meter, aerial in its normal working position, before transmitting at full power.
